as the coldest months quickly approach, many travelers are thinking about winter getaways and beginning to plan their ideal trips to warmer climates. this winter, travelers can celebrate the recent 2016 olympic bid win with brazilians in rio, recife, sao paulo and more. with 42 new direct flights to brazil and seven more planned for 2010, it’s now easier than ever to get there.

in rio, the biggest event of the season is carnival, and travelers flock there from around the world to experience one of the world’s biggest parties. for a slightly less busy time, avoid new years eve and the week of carnival – february 12-16. after carnival, hotel rates drop sharply – the pestana rio atlantica is available for $235 per night in late february/early march. here, rio visitors can relax on beautiful beaches, tour the city’s historical architecture, hang glide over the bay or dine on fresh seafood.

an alternative, lesser-known brazilian destination with new direct flights from atlanta and miami is recife, a historic town on brazil’s northern coast. with an average temperature in january and february of 82 degrees, recife is the capital of pernambuco and the oldest capital, founded in 1537. beyond historical sights, recife is known for its music – frevo and maracatu – that rocks its version of carnival in february. recife has more than 1,500 bars and restaurants and has been called the “brazilian venice” with its many bridges and rivers. in late february, rates at the internacional palace hotel in recife start around $130.
