quilombo country film screening and reception in nyc

quilombo films presents the only scheduled showing of "quilombo country" in new york this summer on friday, july 17th 2009 at 8:00 pm at millenium film workshop, 66 east 4th st. in manhattan. the screening will be followed by a discussion about ethnographic filmmaking with director/producer leonard abrams, accompanied by cocktails and treats prepared by nathalie herling of creativeclaycooking.com, featuring foods and drinks rarely sampled outside the amazon region.

"quilombo country" tells the story of african communities created in brazil’s untamed hinterland struggling to preserve a rich heritage born of resistance to oppression, with rare footage of festivals and ceremonies that blend catholic, african and native amazonian rituals and customs, and examines issues of political identity, land rights, and racial and socioeconomic discrimination. narrated by chuck d, leader of the iconic hip hop band public enemy.
