like a local - new orleans 2 ...

you know by now that the divas love their caffeine. what you probably don't know is that one of us (*cough* editor *cough*) is thoroughly addicted to community coffee's chicory blend. so much so that one pound of this black gold is shipped to her doorstep every month, and she has deemed herself the self-appointed coffee-nazi of her household.

here's the deal: it's a common misconception that we new orleaneans (though i haven't lived in the city for two years now, i still consider myself a local, thank you) prefer cafe du monde brand coffee.

while it's true that "quarter rats" (those who live or hang out frequently in the french quarter) will duck under the awning at cafe du monde somewhere around 3am for a caffeine and sugar fix to help us finish out the night, most french quarter residents (in fact, most new orleaneans in general) drink community coffee chicory blend, and quarterites prefer to read their morning paper or write their great american novels at CC's on the corner of st. philip and royal streets.

wanna really hang with the locals? don't belly up to the bourbon street bars. get up early and meet them at CC's to share a cafe au lait. great baked goods as well.

go there. fall in love with the local heavy dark opaque peppery chicory blend goodness. tip well. go back to visit often.

there's so much diva-love for this place, it's damned near heartbreaking.

I thought jet set divas recognized that chicory was poverty's answer for cutting coffee to make it go further -- because you couldn't afford the pure, real deal...

that's a good historical observation, sweetheart, but it doesn't make chicory blend any less appealing, nor any less tasty. many of today's delicacies, in fact, were yesterday's "culinary cast-offs."
